Overview of Intern & Volunteer Duties

  • Farming
  • Gardening
  • Cooking
  • Cleaning
  • Teaching
  • Counseling
  • Social Media

A short orientation is done. The activities will vary each day to day and the volunteer or intern can decide which activities they would like to best contribute with. Some days you will spend parts of your day in the garden, on the farm, in the kitchen and activity room or in the office.

The resident’s days starts early in the morning, where they work in pairs to ensure the smooth running of the shelter. In the morning cleaning, cooking breakfast, feeding the animals and looking after their babies are all important duties. After breakfast often they will do various duties including sometimes working in the garden, digging, weeding, planting seeds and watering the plants. The fruits and vegetables which are grown on the farm are used for cooking. After lunch they do various activities for their personal development including receiving psychosocial support and extracurricular activities with some free time in between. Evenings they have storytelling, reflections and occasional movies.

“Volunteering at Agatha Amani House has been a fantastic experience. I have met some incredible women who are truly inspiring. I would recommend volunteering at AAH to anyone.”

Volunteers and Interns will learn and gain a huge amount from volunteering at AAH and while doing so, will help support both the charity and the women and their babies and children. Volunteers are also welcome to contribute Ideas on how to get social enterprise programs started. Programs that are in the process of starting are, baking, crocheting and soap making. You will also be able to help with art, yoga, music and health and personal development classes plus social work.

From the Office and workshop, community outreach work is done which involves going into the community Educating, Empowering and holding group and individual sessions. Volunteers can also work with schools and clinics. There may be meetings and workshops to participate in. At the workshop a low cost affordable sanitary pad production program has been set up to provide vocational training for the women and tackle the problem of poor girls missing school.

We accept both female and male volunteers. Female volunteers are invited to stay at the shelter with the residents. Male volunteers are not able to stay at the shelter but we can arrange accommodation for a very minimal amount per day. We welcome volunteers for a minimum of 1 month. We also welcome volunteers who are not able to visit us in Kenya and would be delighted to speak to anyone who would like to fundraise for Agatha Amani House or help with any digital and internet work.

“Volunteering with Agatha Amani House has been an unforgettable experience. Every day I am inspired by the team. The staff members are full of energy, hard-working and dedicated to supporting the women and improving the shelter. The women are strong survivors and it is amazing to watch them grow as they learn to believe in themselves and feel empowered. The babies and children are adorable and I love to read and play with them. I have been able to contribute by painting the seating areas, teaching the residents how to make earrings, setting up an online shop for them to sell jewellery, updating the curriculum and website, and helping to build an advocacy strategy. Mostly I have loved dancing, playing games and cooking Kenyan dishes with the women! They have become family. I have learnt so much from my time here and I am so grateful for the experience. I highly recommend the volunteer placement to anyone."

"Being at Agatha Amani house for this long six months have felt like being home. All the ladies I have been living there together with, are amazing people and I miss them a lot. They really appreciated my work and all the activities I did with them like art, group therapy, dance and music classes. I had so much freedom to do with them and teach them whatever I loved to. As a volunteer you can contribute so many different things at AAH for example in social work, Art, Agriculture, teaching, health, or some creative stuff that comes to your mind... Volunteers are very needed and welcome there. I hope to be able to come back soon."

“I spent almost four months living and volunteering at Agatha Amani House, and it was one of the most meaningful and educational experiences I’ve ever had. I got the opportunity to teach health, hygiene and first aid classes at the shelter, and family life (sexual education) classes at a nearby primary school. I also worked towards sourcing raw materials for a low cost sanitary pad project, and I helped where I could with various other projects at the shelter and within the community including accompanying the residents to the clinics. I developed a very strong connection to the survivors at AAH, and I became close friends with the staff as well. I learned so much during my time at Agatha Amani House, and I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to explore a bit of Kenya during my free time.”

“My time at Agatha Amani House was an unforgettable experience. I was able to help with a variety of tasks, from assisting with group therapy sessions, to writing a report for the shelter, and teaching English. Living in the shelter made this even more special and unlike other volunteer placements. It is very hands-on and I got to know the women well. I felt like I really made a difference in my short month at the shelter.”
